Salary for Fitness Director

I am having a difficult time finding any information regarding how much a director of fitness should make (I am in a retirement community in Rhode Island). Is there any information regarding this, or do know where I may find any information?

Facility Liability

I am an independent contractor personal trainer at a gym in California. I have a certification, CPR and liability insurance. I pay the gym a monthly commission based on my earnings. I train only gym members in the gym's facility. I also have services outside the fitness center such as boot camp held in a nearby park. If a boot camp participant (non-member) gets hurt while using medicine balls, bands, etc., borrowed from the fitness center, is the facility liable for anything?

Places to Advertise

I am thinking about spending some money on advertising for my fitness center. We are a 10,000 square-foot non-chain, full-service fitness center. Any ideas/thoughts/suggestions to which advertising is best? Television?Newspaper? Radio? Direct Mail? Anyone had any good experiences with any type in particular?

Is there a way to figure out how many participants it takes to make/lose money in a group exercise class? We pay our instructors $10 per class, and we average four to eight participants for each class.

Small vs. Big City for Chain Opening

India is still not a mature market for the fitness industry. I plan to start my own chain of health clubs soon, and was wondering if a small town/city that is not very evolved as a health market is a better testing ground to begin with compared to a large metropolitan city.

I am opening a new gym pretty soon, and am wondering about opening hours. How big is the demand to have a fitness center open at 6am? Is it really worth it to open so early and pay the staff, rather than opening at 9am? Do people want group classes that early?

I am looking for a book or software that I can use to craft a small fitness center operations manual, employee manual, and new employee orientation list or overview. I would rather not have to start from scratch, as most policies, procedures and protocols are generic enough that I should be able to tailor them using the software. Is there such a book or software that I could use?

Small Pro Shop Tips

While I don't have enough space for a separate pro shop, I am thinking about putting a few racks and some shelves in my entry way to sell clothing, workout towels, exercise accessories and nutritional items. I was wondering if any facilities have had financial success with something like this. Would it be worth it?
